Common Defense Calls for Impeachment and Investigation into Capitol Breach

January 11, 2021

WASHINGTON Earlier today we released the following statement calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, as well as an investigation into elected officials who incited violence following last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol:

The events that transpired this week will go down in infamy in our nation’s history—events that shook the very cornerstone of our democracy as an insurrection stormed the house of the people under the depraved words of our commander in chief. America cannot tolerate a single day longer of the Donald Trump presidency, which is why we’re calling on Congress to use the power of impeachment or invokement of the 25th Amendment to remove the current commander in chief from office immediately.

However, the damage we witnessed extends far beyond Trump’s words and actions. 147 Republican elected officials voted to overturn legitimate election results. We, the people, elect our government body to represent us—to represent our voices. We, the people, elected Joseph R. Biden Jr. to be the next president of the United States. We, the people, want change, not to continue the insidious and calculated lie of questioning the integrity of our nation’s democratic foundation. By doing so, 147 Republicans continue to spew falsities of a dangerous pipedream; continue to pose a risk to the principles we’ve fought so tirelessly to uphold.

As veterans, we’ve sacrificed on behalf of this country to protect our democracy—now, we are fighting for the very soul of our nation on our own soil against a seditious plot to overturn that very democracy. Enough is enough—it’s time to end Trump’s violent criminal tenure as president and uphold justice and the rule of law in the United States.
