Common Defense Endorses Four Candidates Up and Down the Ballot in Georgia

April 7, 2022

WASHINGTON — Common Defense, a grassroots organization of progressive veterans with more than 250,000 members, is proud to announce four new candidate endorsements for the 2022 midterm elections in the state of Georgia. Those candidates are:

Sen. Raphael Warnock  (U.S. Senate)

Stacey Abrams (Governor)

Marcus Flowers (GA-14)

Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-07)

Common Defense-endorsed candidates who we believe best capture the grassroots energy of our political movement to champion a policy agenda rooted in economic, social, and global justice. We are proud to announce this slate of endorsees because Common Defense is deeply committed to and engaged in grassroots organizing, and these candidates are running and leading with these values at the forefront.

Common Defense is distinct from other veteran political organizations in that we endorse and support candidates who reflect the progressive values of our 250,000 members, regardless of whether the candidate served in the military themselves. Our work in 2022 focuses on organizing and training veterans and military families in these districts in order to give them the chance to speak out and challenge the status quo, and to change the false narrative that all veterans as conservatives. The military community is not a political prop to be exploited, and we will not endorse an agenda of greed and hate.

The Candidates:

Senator Raphael Warnock (Candidate, U.S. Senate Georgia)

Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock grew up in Kayton Homes public housing in Savannah, born one of twelve brothers and sisters raised in coastal Georgia. His father, a veteran, small businessman and preacher, grew up in Burke and Screven County, GA. Senator Reverend Warnock’s mother grew up in Waycross, GA, where she spent summers picking tobacco and cotton. For over 15 years, Senator Warnock has served as Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the former pulpit of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is the youngest pastor selected to serve in that leadership role at the historic church.

Stacey Abrams (Candidate, Governor of Georgia)

Stacey Abrams grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi, one of six children whose parents had three tenets: go to church, go to school, and take care of each other. Her father, a shipyard worker, and mother, a college librarian, faced financial hardships of their own, yet they taught their children the value of service to others. No matter how much they struggled to make ends meet, Stacey and her siblings were taught that someone always had less and that it was their job to serve that person. Her parents were also steadfast in seeking the best possible educational opportunities – both for their children and themselves. Education and service, both which remain central to Stacey’s identity today, were the impetus for the Abrams family’s move to Georgia.

Marcus Flowers (14th District of Georgia)

Marcus Flowers is running to defeat Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia’s 14th District. Flowers has spent his entire career defending the United States. He served as an active duty member of the U.S. Army, followed by more than 20 years with the State Department and Department of Defense. Marcus has spent a decade in combat zones around the world and has worked on four continents. Marcus’s values are those of his district: loyalty, duty, honor, respect, service, integrity, unity, courage, and fierce love for America and its Constitution. Marcus swore an oath at 18 years old to “Protect and Defend” the Constitution, and he lives by that oath daily.

Lucy McBath (7th District of Georgia)

The most important title that Congresswoman Lucy McBath will ever hold is “mom.” In 2012, Lucy’s son Jordan was senselessly shot and killed at a gas station in Jacksonville, Florida by a man objecting to the music Jordan was playing in his car. Lucy left her 30-year long career working for Delta Airlines for her second career focused on reform to make our communities safer for every single American. Lucy’s work in Congress has been focused on working across the aisle and passing laws to help our children and families. She is proud to have worked on numerous pieces of legislation which have been passed through the House, including universal background checks for all gun sales and Red Flag Laws to limit access to firearms for those who are potentially dangerous. Lucy has also sponsored legislation protecting our veterans which was signed into law.

About Common Defense

Common Defense is a grassroots, veteran-led organization that was founded in 2016. We empower veterans to stand up for our communities against the rising tide of racism, hate, and violence, to organize against the entrenched powers that have rigged our economy, and to champion an equitable and representative democracy, where “liberty and justice” truly is for all. For too long, politicians from both political parties have attempted to use veterans as unwilling political props, and Common Defense serves as a home for veterans to organize and speak for themselves and support the candidates who truly share our values.
