Common Defense Endorses Three Progressive Candidates in Pennsylvania

05/16/2022

WASHINGTON — Common Defense, a grassroots organization of progressive veterans with more than 250,000 members, is proud to announce three new candidate endorsements for the 2022 midterm elections in Pennsylvania.

Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05)

Susan Wild (PA-07)

Chris Deluzio (PA-17)

Common Defense-endorsed candidates are individuals who we believe best capture the grassroots energy of our political moment to champion a policy agenda rooted in economic, social, and global justice. We are proud to announce this slate of endorsees because Common Defense is deeply committed to and engaged in grassroots organizing, and these candidates are running and leading with these values at the forefront.

The Candidates:

Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05)

Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon has dedicated her career to serving the most vulnerable — first as a lawyer and now in Congress. She was first sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives on November 13, 2018 following a special election, and currently represents Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District.

Susan Wild (PA-07)

Congresswoman Susan Wild is a mother, attorney, public servant, and a dedicated member of the Greater Lehigh Valley community for more than 30 years.

Susan has been a leading advocate for Pennsylvania workers, retirees, and families. She strongly supported the Butch Lewis Act in the 116th Congress and helped ensure a long-term solution as part of the American Rescue Plan Act to protect the pension benefits that many union workers and retirees earned with a lifetime of work. In the 117th Congress, she led more than 200 Democrats in the House to call for strong labor standards, like paying a prevailing wage, for any federal investment in clean energy and infrastructure.

Chris Deluzio (PA-17)

Chris is a Pittsburgh-area native, Iraq War Veteran, and voting rights attorney. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Chris served as an officer in the Navy and deployed overseas multiple times. As a lawyer, Chris worked to protect voting rights and our elections as the policy director at Pitt Cyber and previously at the Brennan Center for Justice.

“We have the utmost respect for the tenacity and leadership shown through the experience of these candidates,” said Naveed Shah, Political Director at Common Defense. “These leaders are fighting for the values that are sorely needed in Congress. I am proud to endorse Mary Gay Scanlon, Susan Wild, and Chris Deluzio.”

“I am proud to be endorsed by my fellow veterans at Common Defense, who are working every day to fire up, train, organize, and mobilize veterans to fight for progress and a government that works for all of us,” said Chris Deluzio. This democracy of ours is worth defending, and thank you for standing with me in this fight for our common good, where ‘liberty and justice’ truly is for all.”

Common Defense is distinct from other veteran political organizations in that we endorse and support candidates who reflect the progressive values of our 250,000 members, regardless of whether the candidate served in the military themselves. Our work in 2022 focuses on organizing and training veterans and military families in these districts in order to give them the chance to speak out and challenge the status quo, and to change the false narrative that all veterans are conservatives. The military community is not a political prop to be exploited, and we will not endorse an agenda of greed and hate.
