Common Defense Endorses Three Candidates for Congress in Texas

02/25/2022

WASHINGTON — Common Defense, a grassroots organization of progressive veterans and military families representing 250,000 supporters, is proud to announce three new endorsements of candidates in the 2022 midterm elections. Those candidates are:

Jessica Cisneros (TX-28)

Jessica Mason (TX-30)

Greg Casar (TX-35)

Common Defense candidates are those who we believe are most likely to capture the grassroots energy of this political moment and who we can trust to champion a policy agenda of economic, social, and global justice.

Because Common Defense is deeply committed to and engaged in grassroots organizing, many of our previous endorsements have been prescient, correctly predicting and contributing to upset victories like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Antonio Delgado (NY-19), Rashida Tlaib (MI-13), Jamal Bowman (NY-16th), and Ilhan Omar (MN-5th).

Common Defense is distinct from other veteran political organizations in that we endorse and support candidates who reflect the progressive values of our 250,000 members, regardless of whether the candidate served in the military themselves.

As a grassroots organization, our work in 2022 focuses on organizing and training veterans and military families in these districts in order to give them the chance to speak out and challenge the status quo, and change the narrative about the myth of conservative veterans and show who real working people support. The military community is not a political prop to be exploited, and we don’t endorse an agenda of greed and hate.

The Candidates:

Jessica Cisneros (28th District of Texas)

Jessica was born and raised in the border town of Laredo, Texas. As a child, she saw families like hers torn apart by broken policies passed by Congress. When she saw her parents struggle to keep a small business afloat, while politicians in Washington protected large corporations and a broken immigration system divided her community, Jessica knew it was time for a change. As the proud daughter of Mexican immigrants and a human rights lawyer, Jessica is fighting to build an America for all of us — no matter who we are, or where we come from.

Jessica Mason (30th District of Texas)

Jessica Mason was born and raised in South Dallas. Having grown up in poverty, Jessica struggled to afford college, but chose to enlist in the US Navy to help pay for college. After five years serving in the US Navy as a medic, she became deeply familiar with the mental health challenges facing veterans particularly those who served in combat zones. Jessica is running for Congress because she believes TX-30 needs policies that are designed for the success of working people. That starts with new leadership that values all of our humanness and understands our struggles.

Greg Casar (35th District of Texas)

Greg is an Austin City Council Member and movement organizer who has supported working families from San Antonio to Hays County to East Austin. The proud son of Mexican immigrants, Greg has passed policies to protect families from being separated, raised wages for thousands of workers, and has successfully fought to expand civil rights protections. As a Council Member, Greg authored the paid-sick-days laws that passed in Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas, implementing what the Austin-American Statesman called the “most progressive labor policy for the entire state and possibly the American South.”

About Common Defense

Common Defense is a grassroots, veteran-led organization that was founded in 2016. We empower veterans to stand up for our communities against the rising tide of racism, hate, and violence, to organize against the entrenched powers that have rigged our economy, and to champion an equitable and representative democracy, where “liberty and justice” truly is for all. For too long, politicians from both political parties have attempted to use veterans as unwilling political props, and Common Defense serves as a home for veterans to organize and speak for themselves and support the candidates who truly share our values.
