Common Defense Veterans Host Jan. 6th Event in D.C. Demanding Justice and Accountability

WASHINGTON – Today, the veterans of Common Defense, the nation’s largest grassroots veteran organization, led a Rally for Democracy in Washington, D.C.  demanding that current elected officials live up to their oath of office and bring justice forward. Common Defense veterans demonstrated their commitment to the Constitution at the event by retaking their oath of enlistment, which calls on them to protect our nation from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

At the Rally for Democracy, Common Defense veterans were joined by two renowned leaders for global justice and human rights: Arndrea Waters King and Martin Luther King III. In America, we know the people determine election outcomes. The criminal conspiracy spun by President Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans attempted to strip the American people of their voice. Common Defense strongly supports the efforts to reveal the truth of the Big Lie and hold insurrectionists accountable.

Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King stated, “Our family knows all too well what lies down the road of political violence. We have lived that tragedy. My father would be heartbroken to see the same National Mall where he so eloquently spoke on behalf of nonviolence, justice and equality filled with those who sought to overthrow a lawful election and seize power. The best way we can honor Dr. King’s legacy is to use our voices, and our votes, to counter those violent forces trying to seize power and return us to an era of darkness and discrimination.”

As veterans, we took an oath to safeguard this country and the Constitution. That promise did not expire. Trump and MAGA Republicans engaged in a violent criminal conspiracy to overturn the election that they lost. 147 Republicans voted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. They have shown time and time again that they will break the law and engage in violence in order to take and hold onto power. As veterans, we must continue to stand up for our democracy,” said Jacob Thomas, Communications Director for Common Defense.

“Let us be clear: our republic is under attack. We are still coping with the ramifications of the January 6th insurrection. It will take all of us, together, to demand justice,” said Naveed Shah, Political Director for Common Defense. “Our members are demonstrating exactly why we chose to enlist – to protect this nation through and through. Veterans can see through the lies and corrupt manipulation of MAGA Republicans. We will make sure to use our rights at the ballot box, the very rights the insurrectionists and their leaders tried to strip from us. Those who have implicated themselves in this criminal conspiracy will be voted out in a free and fair election and then they will be held accountable for their crimes.”
