Common Defense Statement on Leaked SCOTUS Ruling

5/03/2022

WASHINGTON — Last night, according to an initial draft majority opinion leaked to Politico, news broke that the Supreme Court is very likely to strike down Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that established the constitutional right to safe, legal abortions. The impending decision comes after years of momentum building at the state level and shows the grip that far-right extremists currently have on our nation’s courts.

Common Defense Political Director Naveed Shah released the following statement:

“The draft majority opinion from Justice Alito makes it clear: the Supreme Court is prepared to end the constitutional right to abortion, an outcome that would have swift and devastating consequences for communities nationwide. Should Roe v. Wade be overturned, 26 states are ready to quickly ban abortion, 13 of which have abortion bans that would go into effect right away. This means that people in half the country will be stripped of the fundamental freedom to make their own decisions about their health care, lives, and families – and the consequences will disproportionately fall on the shoulders of low-income communities and communities of color.

“As the nation’s largest grassroots veterans organization, our member veterans took an oath and served to defend our rights, and now we cannot stay silent as Americans’ constitutional rights are stripped away. Our foundational freedoms are being torn apart by a handful of far-right conservatives who have a stranglehold on our nation’s courts and who are completely out of touch with the will of the people. A vast majority of Americans support Roe v. Wade, yet a minority of far-right conservatives continue to push their own extremist agendas at the expense of our freedoms and our health. Congress must act now to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and preserve Americans’ rights.

“And we, the citizens of the United States, also cannot stand by in this moment of crisis. Elections have consequences, and our voices – our vote – matters. In less than six months, we have a chance to have our voices heard and to hold our elected officials accountable when they fail to listen. As has become increasingly clear in the past few years, there is one party who wants to expand health care, protect the environment, and defend democracy, while the other prefers to attack our freedoms and line their own pockets. We encourage everyone to get involved at all levels of government–and together, we can ensure those in office are those who will fight for a society where liberty and justice truly are for all.”
