Common Defense Celebrates Women’s History Month
WASHINGTON — Today marks the beginning of Women’s History Month, a month-long celebration of women's impact and influence throughout history. Common Defense celebrates, uplifts, and honors the women who have made their mark on history in our Armed Forces and elsewhere.
Common Defense Executive Director José Vásquez released the following statement:
“Women have always played critically important roles in the United States Armed Forces, long before they were officially recognized or allowed to enlist as full-service members. As spies during the Revolutionary War, nurses during the Civil War, pilots during World War II, and much more, women have left an indelible mark on American history.
“This Women’s History Month is different from those of prior years, as it is the first to be celebrated after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022. We have already begun to see the effects that this attack on reproductive rights has had on women around the country. This month is not only an opportunity to celebrate the impact that women have had on our history, but also recognize that there is still work to be done to protect women’s rights, abortion access, and reproductive freedom.
“As Women’s History Month begins, we will take the opportunity to uplift women veterans’ stories. We will celebrate the women veterans whose commitment to protecting democracy well beyond their return from service inspires us all as we work towards a more equitable society.”
