KASH PATEL PASSES PROCEDURAL VOTE; SET TO BE CONFIRMED AS NEXT FBI DIRECTOR – COMMON DEFENSE RESPONDS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 18, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C –  Yesterday evening, the Senate confirmed Kash Patel as FBI Director, a move that endangers the integrity of our nation’s top law enforcement agency and the rule of law itself. As an organization committed to fighting for democracy, we condemn Patel’s confirmation in the strongest possible terms. This appointment is yet another sign of the authoritarian direction that the Trump administration is taking.

“Kash Patel’s confirmation as FBI Director threatens the rule of law. Patel has signaled plans to reshape the bureau for political retribution rather than justice, vowing to turn FBI headquarters into a ‘museum of the deep state’ and promoting dangerous conspiracy theories. His leadership risks turning the agency into a tool for personal and political vendettas, undermining law enforcement and accountability while enabling abuse of power and misinformation.”

As veterans, we swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Patel’s record demonstrates a blatant disregard for that oath. His involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, his role in politicizing intelligence, and his allegiance to extremist ideologies make him unfit for this position.

Common Defense Civic Engagement is a grassroots, veteran-led organization (501c4) that was founded in 2016. We empower veterans to stand up for our communities against the rising tide of racism, hate, and violence, to organize against the entrenched powers that have rigged our economy, and to champion an equitable and representative democracy, where “liberty and justice” truly is for all. For too long, politicians from both political parties have attempted to use veterans as unwilling political props, and Common Defense serves as a home for veterans to organize and speak for themselves and support the candidates who truly share our values.
