WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the nation commemorates MLK Day today, Common Defense Education Fund (CDEF) reflects on the enduring contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the many veterans who played pivotal roles in the Civil Rights Movement. Veterans such as Medgar Evers, Amzie Moore, and Harry Belafonte exemplified the spirit of service, continuing their fight for justice and equality long after their military service.

“Dr. King’s vision of an equitable society deeply resonates with the values veterans continue to uphold long after their service. Veterans like Medgar Evers and Amzie Moore exemplify this commitment, extending their oath beyond their time in uniform through their pivotal contributions during the Civil Rights era.” - Ed Anderson, Air Force Veteran and member of Common Defense’s Black Veteran Caucus

Common Defense emphasizes the importance of remembering the role veterans have played in advancing civil rights. From organizing voter registration drives to challenging segregation, veteran leaders have been at the forefront of struggles for justice and equality.

“Dr. King’s dream undoubtedly remains a call to action. As veterans, we choose to honor his legacy by continuing to advocate for a fair and inclusive democracy.” - Britni Cuington, Air Force Veteran and member of Common Defense’s Black Veteran Caucus

On this MLK Day, Common Defense urges all Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made by civil rights leaders, including veterans, and to recommit to the work of building a nation that lives up to its ideals.
