Common Defense Commemorates Fallen Soldiers on 82nd Anniversary of D-Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the anniversary of D-Day, Common Defense, and its grassroots network of veterans and military families are solemnly commemorating the lives lost on the beaches of Normandy and throughout the Second World War. The anniversary of D-Day not only marks the beginning of the end for a tyrannical, fascist takeover in Europe, but a point in time where wars were fought with a clear, achievable objective in mind.

In the post 9/11 era, the US has sent thousands of troops to their deaths throughout years-long conflicts that lack clear strategy, achievable objectives, or a defined endpoint. These “forever wars” have become a looming threat over military families across the country.

“As veterans, we’ve seen exactly what forever wars cost in lives, in limbs, and in the unseen scars carried by our troops and our families. The service members who stormed the beaches of Normandy fought a necessary war with a unified, defined mission to defeat tyranny, said Jose Vasquez, Executive Director of Common Defense. ”Today, Donald Trump treats the U.S. military as a blank check, dragging working-class Americans into an immoral, unconstitutional conflict with Iran simply to satisfy his own political agenda.

The House did its job by voting to stop this madness. Now, the Senate must bring this War Powers resolution to the floor immediately. When we enlisted, we swore an oath to defend the Constitution, not to blindly follow a dangerous commander-in-chief into an unauthorized war of choice. Honoring the monumental sacrifice of the D-Day generation doesn’t just mean parades and empty words; it means having the courage to say ‘enough’ to forever wars, holding power accountable, and fighting to protect the lives of today’s service members.”

Common Defense Civic Engagement (501c4) (CDCE) is a grassroots, veteran-led organization that was founded in 2016. We empower veterans to stand up for our communities against the rising tide of racism, hate, and violence, to organize against the entrenched powers that have rigged our economy, and to champion an equitable and representative democracy, where “liberty and justice” truly is for all. For too long, politicians from both political parties have attempted to use veterans as unwilling political props, and Common Defense serves as a home for veterans to organize and speak for themselves and support the candidates who truly share our values.
