VETERANS CELEBRATE SUMMER LEE’S VICTORY OVER CENTRIST AIPAC CHALLENGER
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Common Defense proudly celebrates the resounding victory of Representative Summer Lee over a challenger backed by Republican donors in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary. Rep. Lee's triumph underscores the power of grassroots organizing and the unwavering support of our community for progressive champions who stand up for justice.
Lee and her campaign faced relentless and vicious attacks from anti-progressive forces and groups like AIPAC, who sought to undermine her courageous stance against the Israeli government's assault on Palestinian civilians. Despite these challenges, Rep. Lee persevered, inspiring a movement prioritizing human rights and international solidarity.
“As a proud veteran and Pennsylvanian, I applaud Rep. Summer Lee for her courageous stance in advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. As a combat vet, it’s important to me that our leaders stand up for human rights and freedoms for all people.” - June Spence, Pennsylvania resident, Army veteran, and Common Defense member
This election outcome underscores the importance of electing leaders like Summer Lee, who prioritize compassion, equality, and diplomacy in our foreign policy. Her reelection ensures that our values of fairness and solidarity resonate within the halls of Congress.
As progressive veterans, we are excited to continue supporting Representative Summer Lee in her efforts to advance policies that uplift all communities and uphold fundamental human rights.

Common Defense is a grassroots, veteran-led organization founded in 2016. We empower veterans to stand up for our communities against the rising tide of racism, hate, and violence, to organize against the entrenched power of greedy billionaires who have rigged our economy, and to champion an equitable and representative democracy where “liberty and justice” truly is for all. For too long, politicians from both political parties have attempted to use veterans as unwilling political props. Common Defense serves as a home for veterans to organize and speak for themselves and support the candidates who genuinely share our values. The candidates we endorse reflect our values as an organization, and our member-driven endorsement process ensures that the candidates have grassroots support.
